Autism Spectrum Disorder Information
Autism is a complicated communication disorder which can result in a wide spectrum of abilities. Individuals affected by an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can range in abilities from non-verbal, non-communicative individuals who will require support during their entire lives, to individuals who have learned to communicate very well and are self supporting, contributing members of society.
The information available on ASDs is growing daily. It is an exciting time to be living in, but keeping up can be a chore. There are several disorders in the spectrum including Autism, Asperger's Syndrom, Rhett's Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). All of these disorders have similarities, in particular, there are three areas that all individuals affected by an ASD have deficits in: social interaction, communication and stereotyped or repetitive behavior. In addition, individuals affected by an ASD could experience differences in sensory integration, cognition, fine and gross motor abilities and emotional responses. It is important to keep in mind these differences when working with and designing programming for individuals affected by an ASD.
