The Ziggurat Model
Thist model is based on current research and response to intervention. Developed by Dr. Ruth Aspy and Dr. Barry Grossman this is a comprehensive framework for designing successful programs for individuals affected by autism. By approaching each individual independently and looking at the aspects of ASDs that affect that individual first and then designing the program to address these specific needs parents and professionals can ensure the program will be effective.
A ziggurat is an architectual style from ancient times. The authors chose this style of building to represent their model because it is similar to a pyramid but has distinct levels. Here is what the Ziggurat Model looks like:
Integral to this model are the Underlying Characteristics Checklist- Classic (UCC-CL) and the Underlying Characteristics Checklist - High Functioning (UCC-HF). These checklists are completed by all parents and professionals who work with the individual to get the most complete picture of what areas need to be addressed.
The CAPS (The Comprehensive Autism Planning System) by Shawn Henry and Brenda Smith Myles can also be used in conjunction with the Ziggurat Model.
